Three Play-Off Finals, Three Defining Moments: The Story Behind My Hull City-Inspired Artwork
From left to right: Mohamed Diamé, Dean Windass, Fraizer Campbell, Oli McBurnie
Football has always been about moments.
As someone who has spent years following the game, studying its history and creating sports-inspired artwork, I've always been fascinated by the occasions that become part of a club's identity. Not necessarily league titles or cup victories, but the matches, goals and achievements that supporters remember for decades.
That passion for football history is what inspired this artwork.
This piece celebrates three of Hull City's most significant modern achievements: the Championship Play-Off Final victories of 2008, 2016 and 2026. Each promotion represented a defining moment in the club's journey and helped shape the story of Hull City for a generation of supporters.
Rather than recreating a single photograph or matchday scene, I wanted to create an original artwork that brought together the players and moments most closely associated with these landmark promotions.
Importantly, this artwork is an independent fan-created piece. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or connected to any club or brand in any sort of way. Created by myself, a football fan who is passionate about the history and how it has impacted culture over the years
2008: The Promotion That Changed Everything
For many Hull City supporters, 24 May 2008 remains one of the greatest days in the club's history.
Facing Bristol City in the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley Stadium, Hull City secured a 1-0 victory thanks to Dean Windass' unforgettable first-half volley. The win secured promotion to the top flight of English football for the first time in the club's history.
The significance of that achievement cannot be overstated. After more than a century of existence, Hull City had finally reached the highest level of English football.
It was a moment that transformed the club's trajectory and remains one of the defining achievements in Hull City's history.
2016: A Return to the Premier League
Eight years later, Hull City once again found themselves competing for promotion in the Championship Play-Off Final.
This time the opponents were Sheffield Wednesday.
Played at Wembley Stadium on 28 May 2016, the match was decided by a superb strike from Mohamed Diamé in the second half. His goal secured a 1-0 victory and ensured Hull City would return to the Premier League at the first attempt following relegation the previous season.
Diamé's goal has since become one of the most recognisable moments in modern Hull City history and remains a favourite memory for many supporters who witnessed the occasion.
2026: Another Chapter Added to the Story
The third chapter celebrated within this artwork came in 2026.
Hull City once again reached the Championship Play-Off Final against Yorkshire rivals Middlesbrough and once again emerged victorious, Oli McBurnie in the 95th minute secured promotion back to the Premier League for the Tigers!
The achievement added another landmark moment to the club's modern history and cemented Hull City's remarkable record in Championship play-off finals.
For supporters who have followed the club through different eras, the 2026 promotion provided another unforgettable chapter in a story that began with that historic breakthrough in 2008.
Why These Moments Inspired This Artwork
As an artist, I'm drawn to sporting moments that carry historical significance.
Football clubs are built on memories. Certain matches become part of a club's identity and are remembered long after the final whistle.
For Hull City, the play-off final victories of 2008, 2016 and 2026 represent exactly that.
They are moments that changed the club's direction, defined eras and created memories that supporters continue to talk about years later.
That is what I wanted to capture in this piece.
Rather than focusing on a single season, player or match, the artwork brings together three generations of success and celebrates the achievements that helped shape modern Hull City history.
A Personal Project Inspired by Football History
Every artwork I create begins with research.
As a football enthusiast and sports artist, I enjoy exploring the stories behind iconic sporting moments and finding ways to reinterpret them through original artwork.
This Hull City-inspired piece was created with that same approach. It combines my passion for football history, sporting culture and illustration to celebrate three of the club's most memorable achievements.
Whether you're a lifelong supporter who remembers Dean Windass' volley in 2008, a fan who celebrated promotion in 2016, or someone who witnessed the most recent success in 2026, these moments form an important part of Hull City's story.
Boothferry Park’s days of locking gates due to unpaid debts are long gone. The Tigers are back in the big time, competing with the best in the country!
And for me, they provided the inspiration for creating this artwork.
