A Tribute to the Retro Shirts of Grimsby Town

For supporters of Grimsby Town F.C., the club’s history isn’t just told through results or league tables — it lives in the shirts worn by generations of Mariners players.

From classic black and white stripes to bold variations across different eras, each kit represents a moment in time for the club and its supporters.

That history is what inspired my latest artwork — a tribute to some of the most memorable shirts worn by the Mariners over the years.

A Visual Timeline of the Mariners

The piece brings together a variety of shirts from different periods of the club’s past, combining styles and eras into a single composition.

For many supporters, seeing these designs side by side will immediately bring back memories of particular seasons, favourite players, and unforgettable afternoons watching the Mariners.

Although the club carries the name Grimsby, the Mariners have long played their football in neighbouring Cleethorpes at the historic Blundell Park — a ground that has hosted generations of fans and countless stories from across the club’s history.

More Than Just Kits

Football shirts are more than just part of a team’s identity — they become symbols of the era they belong to.

For supporters of Grimsby Town F.C., different shirts often bring back memories of:

  • Promotion pushes

  • Dramatic cup ties

  • Long away days following the Mariners

  • Matchdays spent walking towards Blundell Park

Each design represents a small chapter in the wider story of the club.

Inspired by the Mariners Faithful

This artwork was created as a celebration of those moments and the shirts that helped define them.

Rather than focusing on a single season, the aim was to capture a mix of designs from across different eras — showing how the look of the Mariners has evolved while always staying rooted in the club’s unmistakable black and white identity.

This piece is an unofficial artwork, created independently by myself as a fan-inspired tribute.

An unofficial take — created independently, by a fan, for the fans.

A Piece of Mariners Nostalgia

For many supporters, these shirts instantly bring back personal memories — favourite players, important games, and the feeling of heading towards the turnstiles on matchday.

That sense of nostalgia is exactly what this artwork is meant to capture.

Because sometimes the shirts we remember tell just as much of the story as the results themselves.
